Exotic metals, or “boutique” metals, are usually developed for a specific purpose, whether it is due to their high strength, high wear resistance, high-temperature stability, or extreme corrosion resistance. These metals generally have a carbon steel machinability of 20%. With these factors, exotic metals are generally challenging to machine. Often produced in small quantities, exotic alloys are more expensive than commonly used ones. Exotic metals include various nickel, cobalt, and chromium alloys, among others with more widely-used alloys, including Inconel®, Haynes®, Hastelloy®, Waspaloy®, Invar®, Kovar®, and Monel®.
